“In 2014, Uber relocated its Boston offices to Causeway Street in the North Station area, a transportation-centric location. With about 60 employees, they’ve focused their attention on Boston in recent years to strengthen their business in the Boston metro area. In 2015, it was reported that Bostonians took 2 million Uber trips monthly.”
“Google’s relatively new space in Kendall features 300,000 square feet of office space which could support a little more than 800 employees. With significant company expansion such as the acquisitions of Android in 2005 and Cambridge-based ITA Software in 2010, office expansions were made throughout the years leading up to this major addition. Employees at these offices work on Android, Search, Travel, Chrome, and other apps.”
“With its headquarters firmly planted in its hometown of Stockholm, Sweden, Spotify has leased 73,891 square feet of office space at Center Plaza, near Boston’s Government Center. In addition to a partnership with John Hancock, Spotify has dramatically increased the amount of postings for Boston-based positions.”
IBM’s largest project, Watson Health, is based in Cambridge. Their big bet on healthcare has placed them square in Kendall among some of the world’s most innovative companies. In 2016, it was estimated that the IBM block on Binney Street was home to some 700 IBM employees.
“Although they recently moved a number of sales and marketing employees out to their offices in Burlington, MA, Microsoft has revamped their offices in Kendall Square at One Memorial Drive to provide a more collaborative workspace for their R&D teams. About 450 R&D employees work in their newly facelifted Kendall location.”
Beginning with the establishment of their New England Development Center (NEDC) in 2003, Cisco Systems now employs 2000 people in Massachussets at the NEDC and other locations. Through the acquisition of 14 Boston-based startups – and 3 more in New England – Cisco has invested $15B in New England based startups.
Located in Cambridge next to Boston’s Longfellow bridge, Oracle has a history of acquiring large local companies. With 200,000+ square feet of office space in Cambridge and Burlington, MA, Oracle employs thousands of people. In the past, they’ve leveraged their proximity to acquire multiple Boston-based startups.
As of 2017, Dell EMC’s headquarters in Hopkinton, Mass, employed 8821 people. The world’s largest privately-owned tech company has offices on Boston’s High Street.
After purchasing Boston startup Where, Inc. in 2011, PayPal set up shop at International Place, in Boston’s financial district. Their 65,000 square foot offices downtown hold about 160 employees.
“The Boston offices of Facebook focus on four areas: storage, compilers, security, and networks. With a planned expansion into offices at 100 Binney Street, Facebook’s employee count in Boston is estimated to be around 700, and their future expansion indicates that this number may rise.”
Apple’s office space in Cambridge at the CIC is estimated to hold 65 employees. The intent of this office was to hire top-notch talent aimed at improving Apple’s Siri functionality. Apple has offices all over the country and it appears as though for now at least their presence in Cambridge is predominantly for development.
Currently moving their corporate headquarters to Boston’s Seaport skyline from Fairfield, CT, GE will be bringing 800 jobs to Boston. This will break down to 400 tech positions and 200 staffers. Attracted by the young talent and growing ecosystem, GE will soon be a key facet in Boston’s growing Innovation district.”
Twitter Boston is the company’s East Coast center of operations. It also allows them easy access to up and coming acquisitions like Bluefin Labs and Crashlytics, both Boston-based startups. The Twitter office in Cambridge holds about 100 employees and is currently hiring.
“Since 2011, the company has created more than 3,500 jobs in the state, from its corporate office in Cambridge, additional offices in Boston’s Back Bay and Fort Point, Amazon Robotics center in North Reading, and the company’s distribution center in Fall River.They recently confirmed plans to build offices in Boston’s Seaport district, adding 2000 jobs and focusing on the development of Alexa.”
Amgen discovers, develops and delivers innovative human therapeutics. A biotechnology pioneer since 1980, Amgen was one of the first companies to realize the new science’s promise by bringing safe, effective medicines from lab, to manufacturing plant, to patient. Amgen employs roughly 350 people in Cambridge near their Kendall Square office space
Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, Novartis has three operating divisions, Pharmaceuticals, Alcon (eye care) and Sandoz (generics). The company operates the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, which it calls the company’s “innovation engine.” It encourages collaboration across scientific and organizational borders and focuses on new technologies. Novartis employes 2300 in Massachussets.
Acquired by Sanofi in 2011, Sanofi Genzyme continued its focus on rare diseases, but jumped into the area of multiple sclerosis, and expanded in 2016 into oncology and immunology. The company employs approximately 15,000 in the U.S. Sanofi has approximately 5,000 employees in Massachusetts. They are spread out through Allston, Cambridge, Framingham, Northborough, Waltham, and Westborough.
Sitting in the heart of Cambridge’s vibrant innovation ecosystem, Bristol-Myers Squibb’s new Kendall Square research facility is home to a fully integrated drug discovery and translational medicine organization. The teams there will head the most nascent stages of drug discovery, through molecular discovery technologies and discovery platform chemistry. Roughly 300 employees work in the new lab space.
Headquartered in Cambridge, Biogen is a leader in neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. It is the leader in multiple sclerosis, and has the first and only approved treatment for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). It is focusing on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Biogen has roughly 2500 employees in Massachusetts.
Headquartered in Madison, N.J., Quest Diagnostics is one of the largest clinical diagnostic laboratories in the world. Quest has offices throughout Boston and employs 43,000 people worldwide.
Pfizer is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. In Cambridge, they have a 280,000 square foot R&D facility which employs roughly 1000 scientists, technicians, and doctors. Located in the heart of Kendall Square, the unified Cambridge presence represents the opportunity to interlace Pfizer’s R&D capability with the densest biomedical community in the world
Charles River Laboratories (CRL) is a contract research organization (CRO) headquartered in Wilmington, Mass. Although described as an early-stage CRO, the company works in every area along the spectrum of drug discovery and development. The company has 70 facilities in 18 countries with currently 458 open jobs—116 of which are in Massachusetts.
Takeda has a significant presence in Massachusetts. Earlier this year, Takeda acquired Cambridge-based Ariad Pharmaceuticals. It has also recently been restructuring some of its U.S.-based operations, shifting hundreds of executives from the Chicago area to Boston. As a result, Takeda employs roughly 2150 in Boston and Cambridge.
Abbvie currently operates a neuroscience R&D facility in Cambridge. They’re currenlty scaling up their Cambridge facility, formerly of Vertex, to house 50 employees. AbbVie does have an immunology research facility in nearby Worcester, Mass. It is unknown if some of those employees will be transferred to the new Cambridge facility when it is operational.
Based in Boston, Vertex focuses on viral infections, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, as well as cancer. It also has research facilities in San Diego, Calif. and Oxford, England. It is best known for its cystic fibrosis (CF) products.
Merck is a leading global developer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative drugs, vaccines and animal health products. Their 450-employee Boston research center focuses on discovery research in these key areas: immunology, oncology, diabetes and neuroscience. The site is comprised of laboratories and staff that support core translational medicine, discovery, preclinical, and clinical functional areas.
