Amgen discovers, develops and delivers innovative human therapeutics. A biotechnology pioneer since 1980, Amgen was one of the first companies to realize the new science’s promise by bringing safe, effective medicines from lab, to manufacturing plant, to patient. Amgen employs roughly 350 people in Cambridge near their Kendall Square office space
Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, Novartis has three operating divisions, Pharmaceuticals, Alcon (eye care) and Sandoz (generics). The company operates the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, which it calls the company’s “innovation engine.” It encourages collaboration across scientific and organizational borders and focuses on new technologies. Novartis employes 2300 in Massachussets.
Acquired by Sanofi in 2011, Sanofi Genzyme continued its focus on rare diseases, but jumped into the area of multiple sclerosis, and expanded in 2016 into oncology and immunology. The company employs approximately 15,000 in the U.S. Sanofi has approximately 5,000 employees in Massachusetts. They are spread out through Allston, Cambridge, Framingham, Northborough, Waltham, and Westborough.
Sitting in the heart of Cambridge’s vibrant innovation ecosystem, Bristol-Myers Squibb’s new Kendall Square research facility is home to a fully integrated drug discovery and translational medicine organization. The teams there will head the most nascent stages of drug discovery, through molecular discovery technologies and discovery platform chemistry. Roughly 300 employees work in the new lab space.
Headquartered in Cambridge, Biogen is a leader in neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. It is the leader in multiple sclerosis, and has the first and only approved treatment for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). It is focusing on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Biogen has roughly 2500 employees in Massachusetts.
Headquartered in Madison, N.J., Quest Diagnostics is one of the largest clinical diagnostic laboratories in the world. Quest has offices throughout Boston and employs 43,000 people worldwide.
Pfizer is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. In Cambridge, they have a 280,000 square foot R&D facility which employs roughly 1000 scientists, technicians, and doctors. Located in the heart of Kendall Square, the unified Cambridge presence represents the opportunity to interlace Pfizer’s R&D capability with the densest biomedical community in the world
Charles River Laboratories (CRL) is a contract research organization (CRO) headquartered in Wilmington, Mass. Although described as an early-stage CRO, the company works in every area along the spectrum of drug discovery and development. The company has 70 facilities in 18 countries with currently 458 open jobs—116 of which are in Massachusetts.
Takeda has a significant presence in Massachusetts. Earlier this year, Takeda acquired Cambridge-based Ariad Pharmaceuticals. It has also recently been restructuring some of its U.S.-based operations, shifting hundreds of executives from the Chicago area to Boston. As a result, Takeda employs roughly 2150 in Boston and Cambridge.
Abbvie currently operates a neuroscience R&D facility in Cambridge. They’re currenlty scaling up their Cambridge facility, formerly of Vertex, to house 50 employees. AbbVie does have an immunology research facility in nearby Worcester, Mass. It is unknown if some of those employees will be transferred to the new Cambridge facility when it is operational.
Based in Boston, Vertex focuses on viral infections, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, as well as cancer. It also has research facilities in San Diego, Calif. and Oxford, England. It is best known for its cystic fibrosis (CF) products.
Merck is a leading global developer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative drugs, vaccines and animal health products. Their 450-employee Boston research center focuses on discovery research in these key areas: immunology, oncology, diabetes and neuroscience. The site is comprised of laboratories and staff that support core translational medicine, discovery, preclinical, and clinical functional areas.
